ABOUT THE ARTIST
Rick’s Custom Frame + Gallery is pleased to present Pleasures of the Table: New and Selected Watercolor and Gouache Paintings by Judy Bumgardner. Judy taught art at Collegiate and St. Catherine’s Schools in Richmond, Virginia for more than 40 years and throughout her career, continued making her own art. She resides in Deltaville, Virginia.
During a sabbatical in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico in 1974, Judy, and her husband James began collecting masks and the writings of Octavio Paz. Influenced by these works, she used watercolor to explore transparency and the paradox of imagery with the face and the mask.
Still using watercolor and gouache, her current body of work explores the tradition of still life painting of food and decorative platters and tiles, influenced by time spent in Spain, Mexico and Belgium. Judy states, “Throughout history food has conveyed symbolic import in religious ceremonies, secular traditions, art, and poetry. Some of my paintings are titled with dance names when the juxtaposition and interplay of shapes re ect that art form. Others have place names when I become aware in my memory or imagination of the spirit of place. I hope that my work celebrates the pleasures of the table with the communion and joy of the human spirit.”
